Making a Safe Playground Surface
Among the main parts of your playground is the surface you choose to build it on. Playground areas come with many different options to consider, many of which are risky. With poor surfaces the results can be destructive! Children can and “will”, fall from the recreation space equipment. The results of the injuries will rely upon where they land.
You should keep in mind that concrete, asphalt, and black colored top are completely hazardous and unacceptable surfaces to build your playground on. Believe it or not… grass, soil, and crammed earth are equally risky as well. Simply put the wear and tear of the next thunderstorm conditions can make for an unsafe touchdown for children. The recreation space you plan should be away from tree roots, shrub stumps, rocks and other debris that can cause injury. Make sure you check for dangerous materials such as broken glass, and other sharp objects that are in the surface part of your playground equipment. Clearly these are incredibly important factors to consider while working on this task
There are some very safe materials to consider using. These will make certain you produce a very safe gemstone for the children. You can fill up your playground surface with materials such as, pea gravel, shredded rubber, solid wood chips, sand, or even mulch is very effective too! Keep in head if you choose solid wood chips for your surface they should be free of (CCA) chromated birdwatcher arsenate. This is a chemical that can create as a health danger.
When deciding which materials to use for your playground surface please bear in mind these many of these very important elements. If your play ground is NO HIGHER than 8ft. your surface materials should be at a minimum of 12 inches deep. Hold the material loose and do not pack it down. Your playground surface should be at the very least 6ft. beyond daylight hours playground equipment. If the slide is higher or the swings are low you may need more coverage. Children or individuals in wheel chairs can be accommodated using rubberized mats for a clean and even surface. In the event that your playground is over a hard surface and possess used loose fill you must: have 3-6 more inches of loose load, a layer of geo-textile cloth, layer more loose fill again and then add impact mats.
In case the combined height of the playground equipment and your child is higher than 12 foot (standing on the greatest platform) this is consider extremely unsafe.
With all the years I’ve spent in “safe” playgrounds with my own children as well others, you are unable to prevent all injuries from happening. The higher your playground is, the higher the severity of the injury. Keep in head that nothing replaces good old fashioned adult direction.
Injury free kids are happier and so are their families.
I really hope all parents, teachers, and mature supervisors realize the value of the playground area.
I have recently been teaching for 30 years now. Countless kids age range 4 – 18 years old. I have put in a number of years coaching my daughters sport teams and mentoring children.
I love Children. Rearing my own daughters, educating music to other children, having fun with kids, these are all things that bring me a great offer of joy around myself.
